Generally, the surface is good to bat on and it largely assists the pacers compared to spinners. The pacers can generate extra bounce off the pitch to trouble batsmen. Overall, batsmen will enjoy batting here but they need to play strokes carefully. Teams will look to bat first and put pressure on the opponent in the second innings.

Team England

England are the current world champions and they would defend their title. The Lord’s Cricket Ground erupted in joy on the day of the final on 14th July 2019 of the ICC Men’s CWC 2019. The team was led by Eoin Morgan who is now a retired player. Jos Buttler will lead the team this time around who had a successful T20 World Cup 2022 and England won the final against Pakistan.

Hence, he is the leader to take England to another excellent campaign.

The ICC has already asked all the teams to prepare and finalize their 15-member squads. England has announced its squad and there are a couple of players missing from it. The opener Jason Roy who had a fantastic ICC World Cup 2019, is sidelined from the squad due to his bad form. One of the young talents Harry Brook has been introduced who had an amazing last year. The hero of the last World Cup Ben Stokes announced his retirement a few months ago but decided to come back to the team again and hence he retains his position.

The newcomer Gus Atkinson is a surprise pick from England selectors. The speedster is selected on the back of his brilliant performances in the County Championship and The Hundred. His lack of experience in International Cricket is a concern but Jos Buttler and the selectors are confident about his performance. Mark Wood, Joe Root, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes are a few retained players. Liam Livingstone, Reece Topley, Sam Curran and Dawid Malan are new additions.

A few days ago, England and New Zealand played against each other where the latter toured England for 4 match T20I series and ODI series each. New Zealand made a strong comeback to level the T20I series 2-2 after being defeated in the first two games. On the other hand, New Zealand started brilliantly to win the opening match in the ODIs but got thrashed by England in the remaining 3 ODIs. A dominant England won the ODI series by 3-1. Dawid Malan topped the list of the highest runs scored in the series followed by Ben Stokes. Moeen Ali and Reece Topley bowled beautifully and took most of their wickets.

England easily outclasses New Zealand in this tournament and it would be interesting to see how New Zealand come up with a successful strategy.

Team New Zealand

The finalists of the ICC Men’s CWC 2019 have announced their 15-member squad too. The classic batsman Kane Williamson who got injured during this year’s IPL, will make his way back in the team and the New Zealand staff has been monitoring his medical fitness. Hence, he will lead the team and if he doesn’t get completely fit in time then the wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham will be the skipper.

They are such a professional team and always play with brilliant strategies. They are one of the consistent performers in the ICC events. The Kiwis were the finalists in the ODI World Cup 2015, ODI World Cup 2019, T20 World Cup 2021 and WTC 2021. Out of these three ICC events, they could win only the WTC 2021. The team is probably loved by almost all cricket fans. Kane Williamson is one of the most loved cricketers in the world.

The 15-member squad consists of the same players as in the 2019 World Cup except for a few new faces. Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Glenn Philips, Rachin Ravindra and Will Young are the new additions. The team looks solid in all departments. Trent Boult, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi and Jimmy Neesham are the old members. Mark Chapman is an aggressive batsman and he could be lethal in the middle overs. Rachin Ravindra, with his good left-arm spin bowling, can contribute well. Daryl Mitchell is having the best form of his life and his all-round capabilities would be crucial for the team.

In the recent tour to England, they lost the ODI series by 3-1 after taking a lead of 1-0. Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway were the only batters to score some runs. The bowlers still did a good job. Trent Boult was the leading wicket-taker while Rachin Ravindra had crucial wickets to his name. To down England, they have to perform exceptionally well after a horrible ODI series defeat.
